I have presented on financial operations or management skills more than 700 times to more than 10,000 public relations professionals. In each session, I ask if anyone is doing work below their pay grade. The response is virtually unanimously “yes” every time.
Several studies we’ve conducted confirm this is true and is very detrimental. Doing work that can be done by someone more junior is, by far, the most significant cause of over-servicing. In addition, it stunts the growth of both the employee doing the work and the employee who should be doing it. No one is learning anything new.
